Define and explain essentially the technique of the TIFONE sprayers


This GLOSSARY is intended to define and explain the technique of sprayers and their components and exclusivity. For more technical details, care in the use, causes troubleshooting and repairs also see SERVICE DO IT YOURSELF.

A

The activity aimed at protecting the Fruit Trees and Herbaceous Cultures. The key to success is to achieve the best Possible Coverage with the lowest possible cost. Some considerations and useful Attention.
Strategic Goals:

Spraying should always reach a sufficient coverage of all surfaces to be protected: Twigs, Leaves and Fruits.
Spray coverage is most effective when it is reached by a sufficient but not excessive wetting, so not to cause the Leaching of the leaves and the consequent “runoff”, to ground of spray mixture.
Runoff produces an accumulation of mixture towards the lowest point of the leaves and fruit.
The droplets generated by Leaching and falling to the ground, are high-density, i.e. contain a very higher percentage of pesticide, compare to mixture concentration , as
Very often, the specific weight of the pesticides is greater than the specific weight of water (always in the case of powdered or granular products).

Are therefore obvious other important points:

Lost ground drops for leaching are high content of pesticide dose, then very expensive, and easily reaching up to 50% or more of the mixture sprayed out.
Given that the amount of the remaining mixture on the vegetation is still effective, despite large losses on the ground and to aerial Drift …
This means that would have been a sufficient amount of mixture sprayed very minor, i.e. corresponding to the actually remained on the vegetation after the run-off.
It is therefore convenient, first of all, determine the amount of mixture per hectare (litres per Hectare) enough to get total coverage without excessive Run-off and aerial Drift losses.
It is correct, however, emphasise that the disturbances for Run-off and aerial Drift are strongly influenced by other factors, in addition to the operator’s attention, namely:
– the type of plantation (Trellis trees, Crown trees).
– the density of foliage (depending on the type of plant and the vegetative stage).
– the type and quality of Air sprayer used.

Maximum uniform and effective coverage in Maximum economy of treatment, you get at the following terms and conditions:

Trellis Trees having:
– minimum thickness of leaves,
– easy penetration throughout the thickness of the foliage,
– a easier top coverage.
On the other hand, Crown trees are much more difficult to penetrate, specially on the top, for the very largest and thicker foliage, where the different overlapping leaves makes difficult to achieve the more internal leaves where spray mist cannot enter easily, with a consequent need of larger spray mixture and a lot more Run-off and aerial Drift loss.
Particularly critical also in Crown trees, to reach a good coverage of Central Cone of canopy, corresponding to the upper part of the same, due to greater leaf thickness, diagonal and greater distance from the outlet of the sprayer.
Pruning of small Trellis in a more “transparent” situation, leaving minimal overlapping  branches to create thickness. This condition, as well as to promote a more uniform spray  coverage, also encourages greater sun exposure to fruits, with the consequent possibility of lower row spacing with, a larger amount of files/productive plants per hectare.
Using a modern professional Air Sprayer, able to ensure a distribution of spray mist
– evenly,
– symmetrically: right = left,
– spray flow with more powerful from the bottom up, since:
• The lower part of the plant is very close or nearby, and stricken orthogonally, direct,
• The taller part, is always more and more distant and hit increasingly tilted, then according to a longer diagonal and thick vegetation, therefore less penetrable.
It is important to stress that the minimum amount of spray mixture, sufficient to ensure good coverage, depends largely on the quality of distribution of the air sprayer, from its easy adjustability, namely adaptability, to various plantations in the different vegetative conditions.
Among the characteristics of the air sprayer, especially for Trellis trees, and for all the  plantations where the central part of row is free from vegetation, Top “V” adjustable  deflectors are essential:
• to avoid useless dispersion in the centre between rows, where no vegetation and
• to give more power to flows towards the top sides, left and right, the most critical points.
Predetermine the Volume in litres per hectare for the plantation to be sprayed for a minimum  amount of spray mixture, enough to guarantee good coverage, with a minimum  ground Run-off and a minimal aerial Drift.
Calibration of the atomizer for the plantation. The determination of the Volume of spray mixture, litres/Hectare, permits a correct setting of the Air Sprayer, so as to respect the amount sprayed, with respect of only 2 parameters:
– distance between rows “between the” (s), in m
– tractor forward Speed (V), in Km/h

Utilizing the Formula:
(Litres/hectare (L/Ha) x Row spacing (I) x Km/h tractor (V))/600 = L/min to spray in total R + L
For example:
– the Volume litres/hectare decided is 1000 L/Ha,
– the Row spacing is 4 m,
– and the choice for the tractor speed is 6 Km/h.

The formula will be: Example:
(1000 x 4 x 6)/600 = 40 L/min totally, L+R

The formula is telling us that our Sprayer, to ensure a spray delivery of 1000 Litres/ha, in a trees plantation with a row spacing of 4 m and at a tractor speed of 6 Km/h, shall spray out 40 L/min., total L+R.
Once decided and activated the nozzle number sufficient for a correct spraying, e.g.:
If no. 14 nozzles (7 on each side), are sufficient to cover the entire sides, dividing the 40 litres/min for 14, we find the average flow for nozzle 40 : 14 = 2.85 litres/min. each nozzle.
Be careful: this is the average amount per nozzle but, we know that we must deliver a lesser amount at the bottom of the plant and more and more towards the medium and high part of the tree.

Once you have decided the Volume per hectare to be distributed, and calculated the total value in litres/min, and distributed the litres/min in a growing succession from bottom to top of trees, the best procedure will be:

Prepare the sprayer according to sprayer setting decision,
With spray nozzles for distribution by increasing mixture toward the top,
Proceed with a trial of spraying for 5-10 m,
Then stop,
And make a careful control of the spray coverage obtained,
Inspecting the trees throughout its thickness and its entire height and
Correcting, if necessary, the vertical distribution of the total 40 litres/min (20 per side) in a most appropriate way.

Spray Cover control easy and accurate
Utilizing the appropriate Water sensitive papers strips, similar to post-it notes that, applied to various heights insides of the tree, gather the droplets that, reacting on the sensitive paper, will present very clearly the single spray droplets, the degree of distribution and the intensity of coverage.

This way of control will allow you:

To see the spray result and where eventually improve the sprayer adjustment
The survey of the degree of leaching = ground run off,
The ability to correct appropriately, increasing or decreasing, the Volume of calibration of
your Sprayer, i.e. litres/hectare.

Also remember that:

The Volume per hectare should be technically and economically, varies considerably
according to vegetation state, i.e.:
In winter, in the absence of vegetation, Aerial Drift losses will be highest,
In summer, in the middle of the vegetation, the Volume required per hectare is higher and
Leaching losses will be highest

Therefore, the determination of a correct Volume per hectare, according to trees and growing conditions, and a departure spray control are basic, to get the most effective coverage, with the minimum of spray mixture. And costs.

Panelling arranged transversally within the tank to reduce water hammer, produced especially by rapid braking, and that can produce an uncontrolled violent impact and make it unstable and dangerous driving under certain conditions (available for Vector Big 3000 and Vector Big 4000 and Self-propelled Cobra Interceptor).

For a safe immediate spraying in downhill areas, even after important raining.
Available for all Tifone Tractor Mounted sprayers (Pat. Pend. 2013
Hydraulic ontrolled from the tractor seat.

Fully automatic Self-cleaning pressure Filter.
Special system that, unlike usual standard filters, does not retain the foreign bodies, so it cannot get clogged and does not require any cleaning.

The Autofilter is integrated in the pressure regulator device Telecontrol-Exact.
The Autofilter is equipping all Tifone sprayers.
The Autofilter is a completely automatic and self-fluxing filter, so always clean and free.
The Autofilter, unlike normal filters, “does not hold” debris and solids present in the stream, but acts as a barrier between the debris and the spray feeding line.
In the Autofilter, debris are not driven to try to pass through the filter cartridge, but they will remain in the return flow back to the tank.
Return to tank that cannot can’t get reliable, as passing through the attempted close by-pass valve of Telecontrol, debris and solids are instantly pulverized by the high pressure and the high speed of return flow in that point.
The Autofilter is much more than a self-cleaning filter as it does not get dirty ever.
The Autofilter is intellectual property of Tifone since 1975.

B

Line of tractor mounted sprayers by Tifone, 300-400-500 and 600 liters tank, with high technical specialties such as:

General-roundness for a sweet and fluid sliding sideways under the hanging branches and between side vegetation.

Angular programming is carried out by means of magnetic poles immediately moved over. The system is simple and totally reliable (solid state).

Movement to rhythmic swinging trend, of back and forth of the mouthpiece of the Flexigun Cannon. Useful for repeat function automatically, without the operator intervention. Automatic brush-spray angle can be adjusted instantly, for the required operating angle.

C

Type of Cannon for long spray range, with the blast tube powered by flexible sleeve and with a pointing system towards every direction, vertical and horizontal. Ideal for treating Row Crops, vineyards and similar plantations in flat areas, and vineyards and similar plantations in hilly or mountainous areas, where full-directional tracking allows to overcome any spray condition. Also ideal for the spraying in greenhouse crops, where targeting allows better treatment and where, given the environment protected from winds and breezes, they reach very long ranges, with a uniform distribution, favoured by the “saturation” effect produced by the greenhouse environment.

Important evolution of Cannon Flexigun classic Tifone, now available in the advanced version, both in terms of higher aerodynamic profile of the blast tube output, both for their predisposition to receive the new high-density Electrostatic Charged with tricuspid high-power polarizing and preventing any short circuits.

The cannon mouth is equipped with an additional ventral Outlet.

Centrifugal blower with a long outlet for maximum air flow guiding, strong power and maximum spray range.
Available at Tifone in 2 versions:

Tangential shaped = traditional: Cannon 75, with a spray range up to 38 m in open field or 45 m in a greenhouse.
Symmetrical” shaped = with same spray height if turned to the right or left.

To get the maximum safe steering the following points must be observed:

Adjust or modify the attachment to the tractor and the length of the draw-bar trailed machine, so that the coupling plug pivot is = equidistant between the 2 cruises drive shaft.
Thus, the total turning angle will be distributed exactly between the 2 cruises.

Drive shaft support at rest is a very useful device, designed to accommodate and restrain raised end of the drive shaft tractor side, avoiding support for land and protecting it from mud and dust and accidental collisions, during periods of non-use of the machine.
PTO shaft at rest support is available for all models of Tifone ,either tractor mounted and trailed.. (Spare Parts Service, Tel. …39 (0) 532 730,586, Fax 532-…39 (0) 532-730,588).

The correct length of the drive shaft must be carried out on the machine that the drive shaft must operate.
The rule is that:

With the tractor aligned with the machine, the two sliding drive shaft tubes must be inserted, one another, again for at least 1/3 of their length.
Under conditions of maximum steering, the drive shaft must have still a reserve of at least 3 cm stroke free.

Device to block the spray mixture drip from the nozzle, as soon as feeding is interrupted.
There are several types of check Valves applied to nozzles:

DIAPHRAGM type. It is the most common type. Presents the disadvantage of a large footprint that, with nozzles placed in the current flow of the air sprayer, determines major turbulence and consequent distribution of divergences pest fog, which is particularly negative in the works at reduced distance between rows. In addition, the diaphragm system, determines a certain pressure drop in the circuit, to the detriment of the spraying performance.
PISTON type. This system does not have any apparent dimension as it simply replaces the feed screw, which is totally. It has the advantage of not producing any drop in pressure in the circuit, because, once opened, the piston is totally outside the flow path.
S/STEEL BALL type Tifone. It has the advantage of an instant closure and extreme simplicity. Also, does not present external body dimensions because the ball system is totally contained in the stem, for which, the nozzles can be placed even in current, without producing additional turbulence.

Represents a very important equipment in modern Sprayers. It allows the cleaning function (Flushing) of the entire spray circuit of the machine, from the tank until the nozzles (tank, pump, filters, pipes and nozzles), thereby ensuring a speedy and optimal function for each new use and increased durability of the machine. The Circuit Flushing System is standard in all Tifone Sprayers: Tractor mounted, Trailed and Self-propelled.

All Tifone Air Sprayers are equipped with content Indicator of mechanical type, index, on a grand scale. Unlike normal hoses, indicators that quickly lose transparency and are very poorly readable, Tifone large mechanical indicators, are unlimited no maintenance need.

Mechanical tank content indicator now a standard also in Storm 1500 and in Storm 2000.

High power air outlet applicable to Turbofan Tifone to spray row crops, and dwarf trees on both sides, right and left, simultaneously. Equipped with adjustable top deflectors to adjust height of spraying.

High power air outlet applicable to Turbofan Tifone for spraying large tall trees, on single, left side. Equipped with adjustable top deflector to adjust height of spraying and increase power.

Condition where two Fans or Blowers are the one turning in the opposite direction of the other.

Device for controlling the ON/OFF function of spray nozzles, remotely, by Electric control.

Classic polarizer was, and still is generally, made by a ring in Brass or S/Steel, placed at the end of Cannon mouth. This solution is critic as subject to short circuits procured by the deposit of pesticides that are cumulating between the ring itself and the cannon mouth. Consequence is a loss of Electric Charge, till to produce important local burnings. Even up to the risk of fire.

The new innovative Polarizer patented by Tifone has a Punctual tripod shape, where fixing feet are laying very distant from Cannon end and nozzles, are absolutely constantly dry with no risk at all to be wet by the nozzles and so with no risk of any possible short circuit nor lose of energy.

Classic polarizer was, and still is generally, made by a ring in Brass or S/Steel, placed around the single nozzle. This solution is critic as not allowing of moving nor orienting the single nozzles.

The new innovative Polarizer patented by Tifone is an integral polarizer running around the whole periphery of Tower spray wall, independent from the nozzles and assuring an integral polarization of the full spray discharge area. No risk of short circuit.

Classic polarizer was, and still is generally, made by a ring in Brass or S/Steel, placed around the single nozzle. This solution is critic as not allowing to move nor orient the single nozzles.

The new innovative Polarizer patented by Tifone is an integral polarizer running around the spray wall, independent from the nozzles and assuring an integral polarization of the full discharge area of the Turbofan. No risk of short circuit.

A New Technique With Real And Visible Results. The theme of the Pesticide spraying, is assuming increasing importance, due to the growing need to achieve more and more advanced, Objectives, including:

Effectiveness of interventions,
Reduction of the number of interventions,
Reduction of losses due to aerial Drift,
Reduction of losses for Results on the ground,
Reduction of chemical Charge per hectare,
Reduction of Energy Consumption (fuel),
Reduction of spray time.

These goals, all of high interest and of increasing weight and attention, both for the environment and food safety and, last but not least, for the a better Farm economy. So, in order to optimize the spraying as desirable, utilizing new technologies and new aerodynamic attention has come to develop innovative solutions significantly more effective, compared to the state of the art.

Today, spraying assisted by Electrostatic Charge (E±S+) of new generation by is giving relevant and visible results.
It is known that the electrostatic charge system, in pesticide spraying in agriculture is based on the fact of applying a Positive electrostatic charge (+) to the spray droplets, launched by the Air sprayer. The optimal use of Electrostatic Charge, however, also requires the optimization of conditions of release and Camera capabilities, electrostatic, and permeation of mist flow electro-loaded, from launch.

The new Electrostatic Charging (E±S+) system by Tifone, is based on the development of the Area subjected to electrostatic charging (Ionization) and efficacy of ionizing emission and efficiency of the “Polarizer” implemented. The advanced system of new generation uses and “tune” the following conditions.

C1.. Anti-drift,
C2.. Protection Windbreak,
C3.. Permeation ionization (E± S+), intense field,
C4.. Flow Guide “long-range”. The Spraying assisted by Electrostatic Charging (E± S+) is more complete, even in parts less directly exposed to Cannon mist Jet.

In addition, the system of Electrostatic Charging (E± S+) significantly reduces Aerial Drift and Ground Dripping. The phenomenon can be perceived clearly even through simple Visual observation. With the system Electrostatic Charging (E± S+) spraying is also possible at Low Volumes and Ultra Low Volume (ULV), which allows the drastic reduction in the volume of spray mist needed, with savings of formulates even up to 50%.

The economic saving, is the direct result of recovery “due to electrostatic charge” of disturbances, to reduce excess wetting, to reduce the air and drift reduction of dripping on the ground. As you can see, with the treatments assisted by the new Tifone ELECTROSTATIC CHARGING (E±S+), all target points, listed above are reached or approached considerably.

F

Is the amount of air produced by the fan / blower. Expressed in cubic meters per hour (cm/h).

Identifies the mesh density filters. Can be expressed in mm as width of the mesh holes.

The mesh size of Tyler is the number of openings per linear inch of mesh. For example, a 4 second Tyler is a shirt that has exactly 4 openings per inch and 16 per square inch. (= N. of holes on a square of side length 25.4 mm). This type of measurement is used to define the various filters of a modern Air Sprayer: Input filter in the tank, suction filter upstream of the pump, pressure filter downstream of the pump.

Fixed value generally assumed in a calculation formula. Equivalent of “constant”.
Often represented by the letter “K”.

Manual o Remote Controlled.
The Spray Tower 32/180 AA Dielectric and the Spray Tower 36/210 AA Dielectric by TIFONE are equipped with Flow Deflectors Top-Top “Great-Guide”, for the control of Spray Mist Drift in the middle of the rows. The Top-Top Flow Deflectors are Manually or Instantly Remote controlled from the tractor seat, for a prompt precise adjustment in maximum comfort.

The flow meter is a device allowing instant measurement and spray flow control provided by the sprayer. Measurable streams from Digital FLOW METER are:

instant spray flow supplied at the spray RIGHT side.
instant spray flow supplied at the LEFT side.
instant flow RIGHT + LEFT
TOTAL … Temporal Scope, Delivered during a certain period of time.
Scope for treatment provided in a certain plot.
Total Capacity delivered at certain date or time.

The Digital FLOWMETER consists of 2 main elements:

flow detector Group and
computer – Digital Screen.

To ensure a smooth functioning over the time it is essential the flow meter is flushed (cleaned inside) with clean water after each use of the machine. In case of non-functioning, almost certainly this is due to lack of flushing, and consequent sedimentation of chemical.

To restore operation, you need to disassemble it sand remove any residue.

For the selection of 3 functions: SPRAY (spraying), FILTER (suction filter cleaning), FLUSH (flushing).

G

Anti-rust treatment obtained by immersion of the piece to be protected in a galvanic bath (electrolysis).

Safety Rules prescribe that any sprayer has independent tank containing clean water for washing hands and rescue washing face, in case of accidental contact with pesticides.

Safety Rules also prescribe that pesticide must be kept in a safe condition against improper use.

Anglo-Saxon unit, corresponding to 2.54 cm. Still widely used in Italy to establish fitting measurements and the diameter of the propeller or fan, or else.

A static typ pump, based on ‘Venturi tube principle’. Used as a spray mixture mixer or as a tank filler, taking water from a deposit. Also called “Ejector”.

The Tifone propeller adjustment is quick and easy. And is obtained so practically instant, in just 6 seconds on the field.

Unlike Normal Propellers, declared as “variable pitch” where you must remove all single blades, one by one, and replace them according to the desired angle. Practically not possible operation on the field because it requires tools and workshop and that takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Propeller adjustment allows to decrease or increase, instantly, the Volume of air produced by the spray fan, then the real power of spraying effect, with the following advantages:

Size the power and fit exactly to any kind of tree or herbaceous Crop,
Avoid excess spraying, technically and economically negative,
Minimize losses to Drip to the ground and,
Minimize large losses to aerial Drift,
Allow operating the air-sprayer with very low power tractors,

Often mistakenly referred to as nozzles. In fact, the nozzle holder is the device that hosts the spray mist nozzle inserted in the Nozzle holder. Nozzle holder usually includes a stem or stalk, a head to 1.2, 3 or more seats, and a non drip Valve (check valve). The Tifone studies and realizes its own nozzle holders for some advantageous technical exclusive features:

Unified Ring: designed to accept all types of nozzles (ATR, Disc, Plate, Anti-drift, etc.)
Very compact Head, smaller footprint.
Head allowing a tangential inclination, for mounting of Nozzle holders outside the air outlet, to avoid vortices generated if placed inside the air outlet.

Process followed by a electrical polarity in a body. Typical the case of Electrostatic Charge where the mist droplets emitted by an air sprayer, are loaded with electro-positively, to promote the attraction of each item connected to the land, particularly the vegetative part of the plant, in Viticulture, Arboriculture and Row Crops.

The original Evolved Polarizing system, devised by Tifone for the Mist spraying cannons, with the advantage that, given the presence of anchor very backward feet than mouth Cannon, spray prevents any risk of short circuits from sedimentation of pesticide products, typical problem of usual Annular Polarizer.

Device for adjusting the pressure in the circuit of the sprayer. Typical and exceptional the Telecontrol Autofilter ‘Exact’ Tifone which presents total stability and constant pressure.

Adjusting of a TIFONE Propeller is fast and easy. You should, however, do a little practical exercise, to learn how to run the operation with ease and in just 6 seconds.

Some Basic Information:
As the Propeller has a limited inertial weight, is that the operation of the locking release, shall be made with a fast movement.
You only need to learn how to make the required quick movements with the “adjusting key”.
The safety grid of the fan has a central disc with a hole, for the entry of adjusting key, and to reach the centre of the “Big red nut” with a cross-shaped indentation.
Through one of the several slots of the same grid, the adjusting key can then reach a “peripheral slots” found on the propeller cup, cup whose rotation determines the instant adjustment of the 8 propeller blades altogether.
The adjusting key will be rotated “counter clockwise” to loosen the “Big red nut” propeller, and clockwise to relock it, after the blades adjustment is done.

How to proceed:

Hold the adjusting key as follows (for “right-handed” operators):
• With the Left hand, hold the straight end of the adjusting key (the long end with the final bent as “L”)
• With the Right hand, firmly hold instead the articulated extreme short end of adjusting key.
Now focus on the fact that your left hand will only keep the bent end within the cross notch of the “Big red nut”, while, with your right hand, you will have to transmit an “instantaneous momentum,” strong enough to loosen the “Big red nut”.
Focusing now on the light weight of the propeller itself, we must use the most of its low inertial mass.
So, if we apply a slow torsional movement, we do not get enough impact to unlock the “Big red nut”. A quick right hand movement, a “jerk”, is essential.
Prior to the rapid movement thereof, to get a higher torsional effect, you must also take a short pre-rotation of the propeller in the opposite direction, and then make the move as quickly as possible, in the direction required for the function (Left hand to release, right hand to relock)
Repeat a few times to become familiar with this type of fast motion, focusing on points 2.3.4.5., and the operation will soon become easy, instinctive and effective.
Be careful not to overdo the locking of “Big red nut”.
In fact, the force required to release it is a bit ‘higher” than the force required for locking, once the adjustment is made. If you block the “Big red nut” too strong, it will be necessary a greater force to unlock it, next time you have to change the adjustment.
So, No need, to over tighten the “Big red nut”.
Normally, it is sufficient a tightening average, obtained with 2-3 pulses, to prevent any accidental
loss of adjustment.

The pump is the device that allows you to take the spray mixture from the tank of the machine and send it to the nozzles, at a regulated pressure. The pump also serves to supply some additional functions of the sprayer such as : Mixture mixer, Suction and instant mixing of spray chemicals – Liquid, Powder or Granular- spray handgun, fill the tank, cleaner etc.
The pumps equipping Tifone air sprayers enjoy exclusive features and advanced technology, including:

Is the amount of fluid that can be supplied by the pump, expressed in liters per minute.

Pump pressure elements that separate the mechanical part of the pump from the pump circuit. Generally in Nitril rubber. In case of use of particularly aggressive pesticide Formulations are preferably used in special compounds such as VITON ®, DESMOPAN, etc.

Allows quick and total emptying of the pump, without removing the suction-delivery valves. Useful for quick emptying of the pump before the winter break and for quick emptying of the pump in areas with risk of frost. A standard in Tifone sprayers.

Present in the anti shock system of Tifone Flexigun cannon. Corresponding to the point at which it must normally be adjusted the base of Cannon Mouthpiece, to obtain an angle of the cannon pointing within the normal operating range. Important Characteristic in tanks for sprayers. By law, the roughness of the internal and external walls of tanks for sprayers must not exceed 0.1 mm. Fiberglass tanks are smooth on the outside but inside is very rough, so have long been outlawed.
